I remember like it was yesterday. “What school? What degree? Stay out of debt.” These questions and statements only scratched the surface as I watched the unanswered questions multiply. My plan was to graduate and go to college. Growing up in the church, I realized I wanted to do something with missions. I also knew there were things in my heart that I needed to work through with God, but wasn’t sure how to do that. Change was coming!
I decided to put college on hold, one of the best decisions I have ever made, and do a Discipleship Training School (DTS) and School of Ministry Development (SOMD) with YWAM Louisville. I learned (and continue to learn) about how incredible and freeing it is to have a relationship with God.
Here are a few things to be aware of as you are preparing to graduate high school and experience lots of changes (although there are lots of applicable truth for any season of life you’re in!).
It’s alright to not know the whole plan. It’s ok if you don’t have your whole life figured out by the time you graduate high school. Yes, if the Lord is leading you to go to school, then be obedient to that. You don’t have to have a ten year plan in cement. Always be surrendered and open to God’s purpose for your life. Don’t be afraid to do something different.
Living by the world’s comfortable standards is all too easy these days.
Living by default is dangerous. Living by default simply means “doing what everybody else is doing.” There is nothing ordinary about God’s plan for your life. Living by the world’s standards is all too easy. While college, marriage, buying a house, etc. are not wrong in and of themselves, if we’re not careful, they can become idols in our lives.
Do one thing at a time. Sometimes when there is so much change happening around us, it can be really overwhelming and we end up feeling paralyzed and not doing anything. Take a deep breathe and do one thing at a time.
You can be certain that God never changes.
Trust God. It’s not as if God is going to smite you for wanting to honor Him in what’s next in your life. If God has told you what NOT to do or where NOT to go, clearly, you will want to avoid that. Pray about what to do next and then start moving that direction. If you realize it’s not for you, pray, listen, and do as He leads. Your failures and mistakes don’t define who you are. God loves you no matter what.
Pursue God and let Him pursue you. Go after God, not only so you find answers to your questions and direction for you life, but just to know him better! A friend once told me “It will be the only time you can worship God going through EXACTLY what you’re going through right now.” Spend time reading the Bible and talking to God, and don’t forget to listen. He will speak to you.
